Caltech has established a site license for LabArchives under which all students and faculty will now have unlimited use of this platform. LabArchives is an electronic lab notebook that allows you to organize all of your laboratory data (text, spreadsheets, PDFs, Prism projects, and more). Data can then easily be located by keyword, user, or date. In addition, sharing data with specific individuals or groups is also possible. LabArchives Caltech Edition is virtually identical to the Professional Edition, with two exceptions: 1) The ability to publicly share data has been removed, you can still share data with specific individuals or groups but cannot assign a public URL; and 2) The ability to email to your Inbox has been disabled. These two exceptions are necessary to comply with Caltech legal and security policies.

58th Annual Staff Service Awards

The 58th Annual Staff Service Awards will be presented in Beckman Auditorium on Thursday, June 6th from 10  to 11am. We will be honoring over 200 staff members for 10 to 45 years of service to the Institute. We will also be presenting the 8th Annual Thomas Schmitt award. There will be a reception in Beckman Institute Courtyard following the ceremony. Please invite family and friends and plan to attend.

 

Serious Java 1.7.x Vulnerability

A serious vulnerability has been found in Java 1.7, which allows execution of arbitrary code on the victim's computer. All that is necessary for exploitation to occur is to inadvertently visit a malicious website using a browser with Java 1.7.x enabled.

Oracle has released a new update to address this security issue, Java 1.7 Update 11. While we urge you to apply this update immediately, we also recommend leaving Java disabled unless you are intentionally using a site where it is required. Instructions for disabling Java can be found here or here.

Note that IMSS Managed Computing workstations are not running Java 1.7 and are not affected by this vulnerability, however we continue to recommend leaving Java disabled unless it is required.

Off the Clock: Art On Your Own Time

An exhibition featuring artwork by members of the Caltech community will be held in Dabney Lounge February 12-14. Here is your chance to show your stuff. You can display examples of your hobbies or special interests, such as photography, jewelry, painting, watercolor, pottery, sketches, woodwork, yarn work and needlework. Come see works created by your colleagues, and vote for your favorites. Artwork can be dropped off on Monday, February 11 and the public viewing will be on February 12-14.

Off the Clock: Art on Your Own Time - 2013

Our eighth annual Off the Clock: Art on Your Own Time Exhibit was held in Dabney Lounge February 12th-14th. It was well-attended and displayed the multi-faceted talents of the Caltech Community. A reception was held in Dabney Garden Thursday, February 14th to acknowledge the winners in each category.

 

Attendees were asked to vote for their favorite artists in each of thirteen categories to determine the People's Choice awards.

 

A Grand Prize was awarded to the artist with the greatest total in the popular vote.

The City of Pasadena has declared a Level 4 Water Shortage Emergency during a temporary shutdown of a major regional water pipeline. PWP customers must reduce daily water use by at least 30 percent to avoid running out of water.
